Chenille is the plush, looped texture behind varsity letters — and a favorite for streetwear.
How chenille is made
Yarn is looped onto a felt base, creating a soft, raised pile. Designs are often layered on one or more felt colors.
Chenille + embroidery
Fine details like small text don't hold in chenille, so they're added with embroidery. See chenille + embroidery.
Best uses
- Letterman jackets and school apparel - Streetwear hoodies, jackets and totes - Team letters and numbers
Size
Chenille looks best at larger sizes where the texture can show. Small chenille patches lose definition.
Borders and backing
Felt edges are typically heat-cut or finished with a merrowed edge. Sew-on is the classic backing; iron-on is available for many designs.
Care
Spot clean or wash gently inside out.
